• พนักงาร — archaic, obsolete or dated

Borrowed from Old Khmer bnāk (“bearer, stand, support; agent, official, servant; etc”) + ṅār (“labour; service; work”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ភ្នាក់ងារ (phnĕək ngiə). By surface analysis, พนัก (pá-nák) +‎ งาน (ngaan).

1. (archaic) duty; function.
   • 1893, “พระราชบัญญัติเครื่องราชอิศิริยาภรณ์อันมีเกียรติยศมงกุฎสยาม ร.ศ. ๑๑๒”, in กฎหมายไทย คือ พระราชบัญญัติและประกาศซึ่งตั้งขึ้นในรัชกาลของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวผู้ทรงพระคุณธรรมอันประเสริฐ, กรุงเทพฯ: โรงพิมพ์วิชากร, published 1895, page 1615:

     The Secretary...has the duty to serve as assistant to the Keeper of the Seals in the documentary affairs of all kinds...

2. one responsible for a duty or function, as agent, functionary, employee, officer, official, staff member, etc. Abbreviation: พนง. (pɔɔ-nɔɔ-ngɔɔ)
