Etymology

  • Inherited from Prakrit ठड्ढ (ṭhaḍḍha, blunted, cold), with contamination of -ṇ- from a derivative of Proto-Dravidian *taṇ (cold), from Sanskrit स्तब्ध (stabdha, firm, stiff) (undergoing retroflexion),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stabdʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ-tós, with semantic shift of "firm" to "sluggish" to "cold". Doublet of स्तब्ध (stabdh, stunned). Cognate with Kashmiri थंड् (thaṃḍ), Punjabi ਠੰਢ / ٹھنڈھ (ṭhaṇḍha), Nepali ठण्डा (ṭhaṇḍā), Gujarati ઠંડું (ṭhaṇḍũ), Bengali ঠান্ডা (ṭhanḍa), Odia ଠଣ୍ଡା (ṭhaṇḍā), Bhojpuri ठण्ढा (ṭhaṇḍhā), Marathi थंड (thaṇḍa), Sindhi ٿَڌ / थध (thadh).
