  • Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese *çenoyra, from Old Spanish çanahoria, from Andalusian Arabic *سَفُنَّارْيَة (*safunnārya), from Arabic إِسْفَنَارِيَّة (ʔisfanāriyya), from Ancient Greek σταφυλίνη ἀγρία (staphulínē agría, wild carrot).

    Cognate with Mirandese and Portuguese cenoura, Asturian and Spanish zanahoria (and their descendants into other languages), Maltese zunnarija, Catalan safanòria, Basque azenario and Libyan Arabic سفنّاريّة (sfənnāriyya).
