Etymology

Composed of *xid (?) +‎ *-ja (nominalizer suffix), further origin unknown. The root of the compound may be a Proto-Uralic borrowing, possibly via a Samoyedic intermediate. Compare Proto-Uralic *kide (spring)[3][4] and possibly also Proto-Eskimo *kiðaɣ (summer, heat).
