Reconstruction:Old Novgorodian/кѣпе
Old Novgorodian
Etymology
Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cěpъ (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kěpъ).
Reconstructed based on the dialectal Russian кеп (kep), кип (kip, “flail, flail beater, flail holder”)[1][2], originating from Old Novgorodian and Old Pskovian, where the most important feature was the absence of the second palatalization of the velar *k, *g, *x in the position before *ě and *i, which were only softened to [kʲ], [ɡʲ], [xʲ].[3] The origin is also indicated by the presence of a typical Novgorodian change ѣ > и in Russian кип (kip).[4] Compare with Old East Slavic цѣпъ (cěpŭ).
