Old Novgorodian

Etymology

Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cěpъkъ (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kěpъkъ). By surface analysis, *кѣпе (*kěpe) +‎ -ъке (-ŭke).

Reconstructed based on the dialectal Russian кепо́к (kepók, thill, shaft; spool)[1], originating from Old Novgorodian and Old Pskovian, where the most important feature was the absence of the second palatalization of the velar *k, *g, *x in the position before and *i, which were only softened to [kʲ], [ɡʲ], [xʲ].[2] Compare with Russian цепо́к (cepók).

Pronunciation

Noun

*кѣпъке • (*kěpŭkem

  1. thill, shaft

Descendants
