Old Novgorodian

Etymology

Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cěpьcь (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kěpьcь). By surface analysis, *кѣпе (*kěpe) +‎ -ьць (-ĭcʹĭ).

Reconstructed based on the dialectal Russian кепе́ц (kepéc, flail beater, flail holder)[1], originating from Old Novgorodian and Old Pskovian, where the most important feature was the absence of the second palatalization of the velar *k, *g, *x in the position before and *i, which were only softened to [kʲ], [ɡʲ], [xʲ].[2] Compare with Russian цепе́ц (cepéc).
