From Proto-Southwestern Tai *puːᴬ¹ (“crab”), from Proto-Tai *pɯwᴬ (“crab”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩪ, Lao ປູ (pū), Lü ᦔᦴ (ṗuu), Tai Dam ꪜꪴ, Shan ပူ (pǔu), Tai Nüa ᥙᥧ (pu), Ahom 𑜆𑜥 (pū), Zhuang baeu, Bouyei baul.
