From Proto-Tai *pɯwᴮ (paternal grandfather).[1]

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩪ᩵, Lao ປູ່ (), ᦔᦴᧈ (ṗuu¹), Tai Dam ꪜꪴ꪿, Shan ပူႇ (pùu), Tai Nüa ᥙᥧᥱ (), Ahom 𑜆𑜥 (), Bouyei baus, Zhuang baeuq (dialectal), Nong Zhuang buq, Zuojiang Zhuang buq.

Compare Proto-Hlai *pʰuːʔ (grandfather; ancestor), Proto-Austronesian *apu (grandparent; grandchild) (whence Hiligaynon apo, Tagalog apo).
