turīgs

From tur(ēt) (“to hold”) +‎ -īgs, in which turēt still has the meaning of “to have,” “to possess,” attested in folk tales and in older written sources.^[1]

turīgs (definite turīgais, comparative turīgāks, superlative visturīgākais, adverb turīgi)

1. (of people) well off, rich, wealthy (having good material conditions, having many valuable possessions)

   turīgs cilvēks ― wealthy person

   turīga ģimene ― wealthy family

   kļūt turīgam ― to become rich, wealthy

   Par Mežkalnu tēvu runājot, jāsaka, ka viņš bija turīgs' saimnieks ― speaking about father Mežkalns (= the head of the Mežkalns family), it must be said that he was a wealthy farmer

2. (of life, time periods) wealthy, rich (having to do with, characterized by, good material circumstances, material goods, property)

   turīga dzīve, nākotne ― wealthy life, future
