  • Learned borrowing from Latin ecclēsia, borrowed from Ancient Greek ἐκκλησία (ekklēsía), from ἐκ (ek) + καλέω (kaléō) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-ĭ́ā). Doublet of igreja, which was inherited.
