From Proto-West Germanic *Willjōburg, from *willjō (“will, desire”) + *burg (“fortification”). Equivalent to willa + burg. Cognate with Old High German Wilpurc, and further with Old Norse Vilbjǫrg, the second element instead from Proto-Germanic *bergō.
