Agunnaryd
Swedish
Etymology
Inherited from Old Swedish Agundaryd. Of uncertain origin, as there was no village with this name prior the church. The naming order is therefore assumed to be lake → farm → church → village:
- Assumed to ultimately be derived from Old Swedish *Agunde, which was the nearby lake, a compound of agg (“backwards”) + *unde (“lake”), aproximatetly meaning the recalcitrant lake.
- Then from the farm of Ryd (“forest clearing”), which was further specified with the name of the local lake; analogous to Agunderyd.
- Then the newly built parish church, standing alone in the countryside, was named after the nearby farm.
- Then finally given to the village that grew around the church.
First attested in the 1330s as Old Swedish Agundaryd.[1]
