-овий or -о́вий or -ови́й • (-ovyj or -óvyj or -ovýj) m (feminine -ова, adverbial -ово)

1. Used to form relative adjectives from nouns; -y.

   ‎зима́ (zymá, “winter”) + ‎-овий (-ovyj) → ‎зимо́вий (zymóvyj, “wintry”)

• If the noun's stem is hard, -овий (-ovyj) is used (e.g. зимо́ви́й (zymóvýj), ка́ловий (kálovyj), ярови́й (jarovýj)).
• If the noun's stem is soft, the following rules apply:
  • -евий (-evyj) and -євий (-jevyj) are used if the stress falls on the adjective's stem (including the suffixal part -ев (-ev)).
    • -евий (-evyj) is used after ungeminated soft consonants, except /j/ (e.g. вишне́вий (vyšnévyj), місце́вий (miscévyj), ема́левий (emálevyj), перце́вий (percévyj), борще́вий (borščévyj)).
    • -євий (-jevyj) is used after /j/ (e.g. бає́вий (bajévyj)) and geminated soft consonants (e.g. життє́вий (žyttjévyj), почуттє́вий (počuttjévyj)).
  • -овий (-ovyj) and -ьовий (-ʹovyj) are used if the stress falls on the adjective's ending (masculine nominative -и́й (-ýj)).
    • -овий (-ovyj) is used after hushing sibilants (e.g. борщови́й (borščovýj), біржови́й (biržovýj)) and /j/ (крайови́й (krajovýj)).
    • -ьовий (-ʹovyj) is used otherwise (e.g. польови́й (polʹovýj)).
