Etymology
From Old Japanese, attested in the Man’yōshū as 勝鹿 (Katsushika), also spelled 可豆思賀 (Kadusika), with both voiced (-dusi-) and unvoiced (-tusi-) medial consonant forms. The voiced form may reflect local pronunciation, though the unvoiced form later became standard. In the Wamyō Ruijushō (二十巻本和名抄), the place-name is glossed as 加止志加. Originally the name of a district in Shimōsa Province (下総国), later divided in the Kamakura period into Katsushika East (葛東) and Katsushika West (葛西). The western area was temporarily incorporated into Musashi Province (武蔵国) before the district name was unified again in the early modern period.
