Contraction of 蝿打ち棒 (haeuchibō, literally “fly-hitting stick”), from 蝿 (hae, “fly”) + 打ち (uchi, “hitting, striking”, 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 打つ (utsu, “to hit, to strike”)) + 棒 (bō, “stick, pole, rod”).
