From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰɲaɰᴮ¹ (“big; to grow large”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨿᩱ᩵ or ᩉ᩠ᨿᩲ᩵, Lao ໃຫຍ່ (h), Lü ᦺᦊᧈ (ẏay¹), Tai Dam ꪻꪐ꪿, Shan ယႂ်ႇ (yàue), Tai Nüa ᥕᥬᥱ (yǎue), Phake ယၞ် (yaü), Ahom 𑜐𑜧 (ñaw), 𑜊𑜨𑜧 (jʸow) or 𑜊𑜧𑜤 (jʸawu).
