From Proto-Tai *hoːjᴬ (shellfish). Cognate with Lao ຫອຍ (hǭi), Northern Thai ᩉᩬ᩠ᨿ, Khün ᩉᩭ, Tai Dam ꪬꪮꪥ, Tai Dón ꪬꪮꪥ, Shan ႁွႆ (hǎui). Compare Proto-Be *hiːᴬ¹, Proto-Hlai *tçʰiː, Proto-Kra *tʃuiᴬ, and Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kroj.
