Inherited from Proto-Tai *ʰrwɯːjᴬ.^[1]

Cognate with Lao ຫວີ (h), Lü ᦛᦲ (v̇ii), Shan ဝီ (wǐi), Tai Dam ꪪꪲ, Ahom 𑜈𑜣 (bī), Zhuang roi and vi (dialectal).

Compare Old Chinese 篦 (OC *piː, *bis).
