From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀjaːŋꟲ¹ (“to roast over the open fire”), from Proto-Tai *ˀjɯəŋꟲ (“to roast”).[1]
Cognate with Lao ຢ້າງ (yāng), Lü ᦊᦱᧂᧉ (ẏaang²), Shan ယၢင်ႈ (yāang), Tai Nüa ᥕᥣᥒᥲ (yàang), Zhuang iengj.
