Etymology

From elision of หมากเขือ, itself a compound of หมาก (màak, fruit prefix) + an element เขือ (kʉ̌ʉa), the latter ultimately from Middle Chinese (MC gja, “eggplant; aubergine”). Cognate with Lao ໝາກເຂືອ (māk khư̄a), Shan မၢၵ်ႇၶိူဝ် (màak khǒe).
