Inherited from Proto-Tai *hwaːᴬ (partition; lid). Cognate with Isan ฝา, Lao ຝາ (), Northern Thai ᨺᩣ (faa¹), Khün ᨺᩣ (faa¹), ᦚᦱ (ḟaa), Tai Dam ꪠꪱ (pha), Tai Dón ꪠꪱ, Shan ၽႃ (phǎa), Tai Nüa ᥜᥣᥴ (fáa), Ahom 𑜇𑜡 (phā) or 𑜇𑜨𑜡 (phoā), Zuojiang Zhuang pa, Zhuang fa.
