Inherited from Proto-Tai *hwaːᴬ (“partition; lid”). Cognate with Isan ฝา, Lao ຝາ (fā), Northern Thai ᨺᩣ (faa¹), Khün ᨺᩣ (faa¹), Lü ᦚᦱ (ḟaa), Tai Dam ꪠꪱ (pha), Tai Dón ꪠꪱ, Shan ၽႃ (phǎa), Tai Nüa ᥜᥣᥴ (fáa), Ahom 𑜇𑜡 (phā) or 𑜇𑜨𑜡 (phoā), Zuojiang Zhuang pa, Zhuang fa.
