Etymology

Inherited from a variant like *पोंछइ (poṃchaï) of Prakrit पुंछइ (puṃchaï), पुच्छइ (pucchaï), पुसइ (pusaï), फुंसइ (phuṃsaï), probably from Dravidian. See there for more. Cognate with Bengali পোঁছা (pō̃cha), পুঁছা (pũcha), Punjabi ਪੂੰਝਣਾ (pūñjhṇā),Marathi पुसणे (pusṇe), Nepali पुछ्नु (puchnu), Assamese মচা (mosa).
