Etymology

From earlier *نْتَاع (*ntāʕ), from earlier مْتَاع (mtāʕ) by assimilation, ultimately from Arabic مَتَاع (matāʕ, belongings) Cognate with Egyptian Arabic بتاع (bitāʕ), Tunisian Arabic مْتَاع (mtāʕ), Moroccan Arabic تاع (tāʕ), نتاع (ntāʕ) and Maltese ta’.
