Etymology
Related to بَعْد (baʕd, “after”). Unlikely to be from Arabic بَعْدَ أَنْ (baʕda ʔan, “after...”) due to the absence of any form *بَعْدَان (*baʕdān) resembling كَمَان (kamān, “also”). Instead, as the monophthong ē usually reflects an earlier diphthong ـَيْـ (ay), we may suppose that the original form is بَعْدَيْن (baʕdayn) and give it one of the following etymologies:
- بَعْد (baʕd, “after”) + ـَيْن (-ayn, dual suffix), literally “two afters”
- Arabic بَعْدَئِذٍ (baʕdaʔiḏin, “afterwards”), with elision of the ذ (ḏ) as in هيك (hayk, hēk, “like this; like that”) or هَيّ (hayy, “this”, feminine)
- Arabic بَعْدَ إِنْ (baʕda ʔin, “after...”), a potential alternative form of بَعْدَ أَنْ (baʕda ʔan)
However, these presuppose that the original form is بَعْدَيْن (baʕdayn), which may not in fact be the case: many speakers who otherwise retain diphthongs in final syllables say بَعْدين (baʕdēn), along with صَحْتين (ṣaḥtēn, after someone finishes eating) and أَهْلين (ʔahlēn, “welcome”), not *بَعْدَيْن (*baʕdayn), *صَحْتَيْن (*ṣaḥtayn), or *أَهْلَيْن (*ʔahlayn).
This suggests that these words may be originally without diphthongs. To wit, Kristen Brustad has proposed that صَحْتين (ṣaḥtēn) and أَهْلين (ʔahlēn) are from sporadic lengthenings of Arabic صِحَّةً (ṣiḥḥatan, literally “with health”) and أَهْلًا (ʔahlan). If the monophthong ē of بَعْدين (baʕdēn) was not a later innovation triggered by analogy to these forms, the term may likewise be from an Arabic بَعْدًا (baʕdan, “afterwards”) instead of any of the above possibilities.
