Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (YKOYMWNtn' /ē̆stādan/),[1] from Old Persian, from Proto-Iranian *staH- (“to place, stand”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *staH-, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”).[2]

Usage notes
- ایستادن (ēstādan / istâdan) refers to the action of standing up, not the state of standing. Hence the Persian equivalent for English "to stand" is the perfect conjugation of ایستادن (ēstādan / istâdan), i.e. "to have stood up". The same is true of نشستن (nišastan / nešastan, “to sit down”).
- Speakers in Afghanistan, especially in informal contexts, tend to compound verbs even if they have independent conjugations. So speakers from Afghanistan will more often say ایستاد شدن (ēstād šudan / istâd šodan) and ایستاد کردن (ēstād kardan / istâd kardan) than the verb forms provided below.
