Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic страньникъ (stranĭnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *stornьnikъ. By surface analysis, страна́ (straná) +‎ -ник (-nik). Compare Old East Slavic стороньникъ (storonĭnikŭ). Formally, a doublet of сторо́нник (storónnik).
