Etymology

Literally, if God wills. Calque of Serbo-Croatian ако Бог да / ako Bog da, itself a calque from Arabic إن شاء الله (ʔin šāʔ allāh, if God has willed [it]). Compare Polish jak Bóg da.

Usage notes

  • дай боже (daj bože) is generally used when someone is cheering up someone else and is trying to manifest that a certain desired thing happens, whereas кед Бог да (ked Boh da) may be used of oneself.
