From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (to suck). Compare τῐ́τθη (tĭ́tthē, wet nurse), θῆλῠς (thêlŭs, female), θηλή (thēlḗ, teat) and τῐθήνη (tĭthḗnē, wet nurse).
