Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unexplained. Sanskrit कीट (kīṭa, worm, insect) is unrelated. According to Beekes, probably from Pre-Greek.

Pronunciation

Noun

κῑ́ς • (kī́sm (genitive κῑός); third declension

  1. weevil (beetle in the superfamily Curculionoidea)

Declension

  • The declension is superficially similar to that of λῑ́ς (lī́s, lion), but the two terms are too sparsely-attested to draw any useful comparisons.

Descendants

  • Translingual: Cis
