From Biblical Hebrew מֹשֶׁה (mōšê). The non-Attic diphthong ωυ is found in the Septuagint, and was likely of Ionic origin, though was later regularised in disyllabic Μωσῆς (Mōsês) and trisyllabic Μωϋσῆς (Mōüsês).
