  1. (transitive) to break (to cause something to permanently lose its shape by force so that separate parts of it can be distinguished; to share by breaking)
  2. (transitive) to break (to not adhere to some standards, arrangements, e.g. rules, laws)
  3. (transitive, printing) to break (to form columns of a book or magazine before printing)
  4. (transitive) to break (to overcome obstacles or resistance)
  5. (intransitive, impersonal) to break; to ache (to experience severe bone and muscle pain that makes movement difficult) [with accusative ‘whom’; or with w (+ locative) ‘where’]
