Etymology 1

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zametь, ~ti f (blowing around, blowing away, ruffling, dispelling; throwing, sweeping; sweeping off, scramming), from *mestì (blow away, skedaddle; gust, blow in; sweep off, scram), from which mieść was formed. First attested in the 16th century.[1][2]
