From Proto-Iranian *hwanH- (“to call”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swanH-, from Proto-Indo-European *swenh₂- (“to sound”).[1] Compare Persian خواندن (xândan), Latin sonō, Sanskrit स्वनति (svanati).
