Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 幽鬱.

Collapsed in usage with the similar sounding ưu uất, which is the reading of Chinese 憂鬱 / 忧郁 (yōuyù). Some prescriptivists might prefer one over the other, although in practice, they are hardly differentiated.
