From Proto-Slavic *terti, from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (“to rub, rub by twisting, twist, turn”). Cognate with Latin terō (“to rub”), Ancient Greek τρίβω (tríbō, “to rub”), Lithuanian trinti (“to rub”), Latvian trīt (“to rub”), Armenian թրել (tʻrel, “to knead”).
