Borrowed from translingual Terebratula. Further from Latin terebrātus (boring, drilling) +‎ Latin -ula (diminutive suffix), from terebrō (to bore, to drill), terebra (borer, drill, gimlet), and terō (to rub, to wear upon). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to rub, to turn, to pierce, to drill).
