From Old Swedish stǣþia, from Old Norse steðja (“stop, affirm, permit”), from Proto-Germanic *stadiz (“place, location”), from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂tis (“standing, position”). Cognate with Icelandic steðja, Faroese steðga, Norwegian Bokmål ste and stede, Norwegian Nynorsk ste and stede, Danish stede. Doublet of städa and stad.
