Etymology

Unknown, probably Liburnian or Vulgar Latin substrate related to Ancient Greek σκόλυμος (skólumos) also meaning a golden thistle (Scolymus hispanicus), a littoral plant that was eaten in spite of its bland flavour when fishers had no success on the Dalmatian coast, as well as by poor farmers in Alentejo, because it has a high nutritional value regardless of the worth of soil it grows on.
