Etymology
Inherited from Latin pontem m. Compare Aromanian punti.
Based on the Aromanian and Megleno-Romanian cognates referring to all bridges in general, it is probable that older Romanian also did. This change may have come about due to centuries of Slavic administration preferring the Slavic derived term pod (“bridge”), during which time punte was relegated to reference of bridges of inferior construction and size (as opposed to the superior quality and size of the pod).
