pitë

Albanian

Etymology

An eastern Mediterranean wanderwort of unknown origin; compare Byzantine Greek πίτα (píta) (also πίττα (pítta), πήττα (pḗtta)), Bulgarian пита (pita), Serbo-Croatian pita, Turkish pita and Hebrew [script needed] (pîtā) (cf. Aramaic פִיתָּא (pītā, piece of bread)). Possibly from Vulgar Latin *picta (literally painted).[1] However, despite Orel's reservations, the immediate source of the wanderwort is likely Greek.

Probably not related to petë (layer), though folk-etymological influence is possible.

Noun

pitë f (plural pite, definite pitja, definite plural pitet)

  1. pastry made out of several layers, filled with cheese, meat, etc. (Can we verify(+) this sense?)
  2. a kind of bread or cake (of dough, bread)

Descendants

  • ? Byzantine Greek: πίτα (píta, cake, flatbread) (disputed) (see there for further descendants)
