From Latin oleum, derived from an earlier Ancient Greek ἔλαιον (élaion, “olive oil”) or perhaps both from the same source. In any case, most likely from a Mediterranean Pre-Greek source. Cognate with Aragonese olio, Franco-Provençal ôlyo, Italian olio ~ oglio and Venetan ojo.
