From Middle High German noppen (“to form/pick nubs”). Equivalent to a denominal of Noppe (“nodule, bobble”)

- (textiles) to pick or pluck off pills/nubs (from a fabric)
- Sie noppt den Wollpullover, bis alle Knötchen weg sind.
- She picks the pills off the wool sweater until all the little knots are gone.
- (textiles) to provide with nubs; to create a nubby texture
- Beim Spinnen kann man das Garn absichtlich noppen.
- When spinning you can deliberately create nubs in the yarn.

- Common in textile/jargon contexts; the participle appears attributively: genoppt (e.g., ein genoppter Stoff).
