Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *nep(ō)t-, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)népōt (“grandson; descendant”). Originally a t-stem, it became an i-stem in Lithuanian via the accusative -im < *-m̥. Cognates include Old Church Slavonic нетии (netii), Sanskrit नपात् (nápāt), Ancient Greek ἀνεψιός (anepsiós), Latin nepōs, Old English nefa, Primitive Irish ᚅᚔᚑᚈᚈᚐ (niotta, genitive).
