Etymology
From earlier middelerd, featuring the frequent conflation of erd (“homeland”) with erthe (“earth, Earth”); in turn an alteration of earlier middenerd; from Old English middaneard, in turn an alteration of Old English middanġeard; derived from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz. Equivalent to middel + erthe.
