From Proto-Finnic *kündüs (compare Estonian künnis, Ingrian kynnys, Karelian kynnyš, Veps künduz, Votic tšünnüz), possibly an old derivation from kynsi (“(finger)nail”) (compare Erzya кенкш (kenkš, “door”), possibly from кенже (kenže, “(finger)nail”), which is akin to kynsi).
