Borrowed from Spanish camaleón, from Latin chamaeleōn, from Ancient Greek χαμαιλέων (khamailéōn), ultimately a calque of Akkadian 𒌨𒈤𒊭𒆠 (nēšu ša qaqqari, “chameleon, reptile”, literally “lion of the ground; predator that crawls upon the ground”).
