From Proto-Somaloid *ilim, from Proto-Cushitic *ʔilmuʔ (tear), literally "water of eyes", equivalent to Proto-Cushitic *ʔil- (eye) + *mVʔ- (water), probably derived from Proto-Afroasiatic; compare with Egyptian rmj.[1]

Cognate with Aweer ilme, Rendille ilim, Oromo imimmaan, Waata ilmaani, Khonso ilmaamaa, Burji ilma, Yaaku ilmamu, Dahalo ilima, Aasax elelema, Blin ereñw, Beja mile.
