From Middle High German hint, pre-cluster shortening of hīnt, itself contraction of hīnaht, from Old High German hīnaht (“tonight”). Compare obsolete German heinacht (“tonight”), Bavarian heint, Yiddish הײַנט (haynt) (both “today”).
