Etymology

From Old Cornish gueus, from Proto-Brythonic *gweβus (compare Breton gweuz, Welsh gwefus), compound of *we- and Proto-Celtic *bussus (lip) (compare Scottish Gaelic bus, Old Irish busóc (kiss)), from an onomatopoeia. Compare similar onomatopoeic words in Indo-European: Latin bāsium (kiss), Lithuanian bučiúoti (to kiss), Albanian buzë (mouth), Persian بوسیدن (bôsidan, to kiss).
